The term “heart disease” encompasses any conditions related to the heart muscle, the arteries that carry blood from the heart, and the valves that pump blood within the heart. Specific diseases that fall under heart disease include coronary artery disease (the most common type of heart disease and leading cause of heart attacks; coronary heart disease (collective term describing disease of the coronary arteries and resulting complications, including chest pain and heart attacks); cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart valves); pericardial disease (disease of the pericardium, the protective sac surrounding the heart); congenital heart disease (developed before birth); and heart failure (heart can’t pump enough blood to organs and tissues).
